As seen on Healthy Holistic Living, Dr. Christina Sanchez from Compultense University in Madrid, Spain has been researching (for more than a decade) the anti-tumor influence of THC which is the main psychoactive element of cannabis. She has delivered firm information that explains how THC destroys cancerous cells completely without having a negative impact on the healthy cells.
The Ongoing Cannabis Research
Wai Liu is a British scientist and an oncologist at the University of London’s St. George’s medical school and his research also indicates the powerful anti-cancer characteristics of THC and its capacity to target and turn off pathways which encourage cancer growth. Liu asserts that pharmaceutical companies spend billions on drugs which perform the same activity even though cannabis does it completely naturally and without any psychoactive effects.
Liu believes that there are a lot of cancer types that should respond well to these agents from cannabis. This is crucial, as noted on Healthy Holistic Living, if we take into consideration that states have been legalizing medical cannabis while the federal government is being pressured into removing cannabis from the list of illegal drugs. Moreover, despite a lot of patents on the plant, the feds are still in a fight against cannabis.
To illustrate, patent No. 6,630,507 is for cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants and this may be why they are slow on declassifying this beneficial plant. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, cannabinoids may be used as neuroprotectants, for example, in decreasing neurological damage after strokes or trauma or the treatment of neurological illnesses like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s.
Dr. Sanchez’s Findings
She was the lead researcher of a study done on cannabis from 1998 and it explains that cells die differently after treatment with cannabinoids, i.e. they “commit suicide” or enter a state of apoptosis (self-destruction process). The cannabinoids target the bad cells only whereas they do not have a negative influence on the healthy ones, as it is the case with chemo and radiation.
The cannabinoids enter into the natural endocannabinoid system found in our bodies, as explained on Healing Life Is Natural and can regulate a lot of functions in the body, including reproduction, food intake, behavior, and appetite.
A bit of Cannabis History
According to Hindu texts, cannabis was known as the “sacred grass” and it has also been part of traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. It has the power to lower pain significantly and to replace toxic meds. However, it still remains misunderstood by many, though the research on its medicinal properties has been exponentially growing.
