How To Grow Tangerines In Your Own Home: You Will Have Hundreds Of Them!

One thing is for sure; we all enjoy eating a juicy tangerine. This refreshing and yummy fruit, also known as Clementine, can be purchased in supermarkets, at the farmer’s market, in healthy food stores, and so on.

But, we cannot be 100 percent sure that the tangerines we buy from these places were organically grown. This being said, it is good to know that growing your own tangerines at home is so easy and everyone can do it!

Below, check out useful tips we found on Gardening Know How on how to grow your own tangerine tree in your garden.

Planting Your Tangerine Tree

Tangerines should be grown in a pot, unless you live in a sub-tropical or tropical part of the world. It is good to know that though they can stand firm against cold weather (even better than other citrus fruits), freezing temperatures can harm the tree. Even when the climate is warmer, it is best if you keep the tree in a shady area of the garden, but a space that will also provide enough sunlight.

Choose a tree which is already a year or two old and one that is grafted onto a rootstock. Before planting, find a container which has enough room for the tree to grow and expand, i.e. ensure there are at least several inches free soil around the root.

Regarding the soil, choose one with a neutral pH (most quality potting soil is already neutral). If necessary wash off most of the peat around the root ball. Once you plant it, press down the soil. Water it regularly and make sure the soil is always moist (avoid overly wet soil).

Caring for Your Growing Tangerine Tree

  • Fertilize the soil twice per year and whenever you notice new growths
  • Keep the pot in a sunny area of the garden or terrace
  • You can move the tree outdoors when the weather is above 4 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Make sure you gradually move the tree to the new climate to prevent shock and leaf loss
  • Repeat the same procedure in the fall when the temperatures decrease
  • When you keep the tangerine indoors, water it when the top of the soil is dry when you touch it
  • When the tree is outside, you need to water it every day
  • Tangerines need no pruning
  • Tangerine trees need to be re-potted every 3 to 4 years
  • You can expect fruits around the tree’s 3rd of 4th year of life
