Grape Seed Extract Outperforms Chemo in Killing Advanced Cancer Cells

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, and the chances are you know someone who suffers from it. If this is the case, they might find relief using the newly discovered anti-cancer powers of grape seed extract. According to a new study, grape seed extract rapidly prevents the progression of aggressive cancers, and does so more effectively than chemo-therapy.

The extract starts shrinking and destroying cancer cells very quickly, while not affecting the healthy cells around the cancerous ones. This aspect is what makes it better than chemo, as this conventional cancer treatment attacks both cancerous and nearby healthy cells, and basically destroys them.

The study that looked into the effects of grape seed extract was conducted at the University of Colorado Cancer Center, and published in the Cancer Letters journal. The basic idea behind the study was to show whether the grape seed extract is more effective on advanced stage colorectal cancer cells than it is in the less advanced stages.

We’ve known for quite a while that the bioactive compounds in grape seed extract selectively target many types of cancer cells. This study shows that many of the same mutations that allow colorectal cancer cells to metastasize and survive traditional therapies make them especially sensitive to treatment with GSE, says Molly Derry, PhD candidate that was part of the team involved in the research.

She also says that the significance of these findings is increased due to the low screening rates for colorectal cancer, and the fact that over 60 percent of colorectal cancers are discovered once they’ve already reached advanced stages.

Grapes

This fruit was brought to the United States more than three hundred years ago, as it is native to Europe. Grapes are a rich source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, while their caloric count is fairly low; they contain around one hundred calories per serving. Grape seed extract has been in use in medicinal purposes for ages, as the natural medicine community discovered it can help with cardiovascular issues and hormonal disorders, such as diabetes. Research on grapes and grapes seed extract effects on leukemia and other serious diseases is being conducted as we speak.

Due to its ability to selectively target cancer cells, grape seed extract is presumed to be effective against various types of cancer, and not colorectal cancer only. It is a common opinion in the medical community that is pushing for the use of grape seed extract in cancer-treating purposes that these effects are achieved through the process of oxidative stress, but this opinion is yet to be proven through research.
