Singapore: the World’s Second Safest City after Tokyo according to the EIU’s Safe Cities Index 2019

Singapore has kept its position as the second safest city in the world after Tokyo, according to the EIU’s Safe Cities Index.

This index ranks a total of 60 countries and 5 continents and takes into account more than 50 quantitative and qualitative indicators which spread across 4 categories of security.

These four categories are infrastructure, digital, personal, and health.

10 new indicators were added in 2019, including existence and speed of emergency services, existence of disaster plans, and the capacity to defend the infrastructure against cyber attacks.

Singapore Ranked High in Important Categories

A crucial element of urban safety is the capacity of a city to recover from disasters or shocks, according to the EIU.

This is the third time that Singapore came in second overall. The two previous reports were 2017 and 2015.

The Republic of Singapore also did well in personal security and infrastructure. They’re also very good in digital security and finished second in this category.

In the category of health security, they came from the 13th place in 2017 to the 8th in 2019.

The senior editor of the SCI 2019 report, Ms. Naka Kondo says that this research pinpoints how several different security types are connected and that it’s rare finding a city with very good results in one safety pillar and lacking in others.

6 cities from Asia Pacific moved into the top 10- Osaka is third, Sydney is fifth, Seoul is eighth, and Melbourne is tenth.

The full list of 10 safest cities in the world is: Tokyo, Singapore, Osaka, Amsterdam, Sydney, Toronto, Washington DC, Copenhagen, Seoul, and Melbourne.

Hong Kong dropped from the tenth to the twentieth place even though this wasn’t because of the ongoing protests since the data was collected prior to these protests.

But, if they continue, they can influence the city’s ranking.

In case of sustained attacks on infrastructure, increase in political instability, civil unrest, etc. Hong Kong’s score can drop, claims a spokesman for the EIU.

Why Is Singapore a Safe Place to Live?

It’s well known that this city and republic has one of the lowest rates of crime on a global level. But, you’re probably wondering why.

The answer is quite simple- the penalties, even for small crimes, are quite severe.

However, a hot topic of debate worldwide is the usage of corporal and capital punishment in Singapore; though it’s not used as often today, they’re still not opponents to such policies.

The street crimes in this city are low and the dominant forms are pick pocketing, theft, and purse snatching.

They happen when the chance arises and someone doesn’t attend to their possessions or they’re in a crowded area like a night club or a market.
