Named after the British Monarch Queen Victoria, the Victoria Crowned Pigeon is the biggest pigeon species in the world.
This wonderful bird has a blue lace-like crest on top of its head and its homeland is New Guinea. The pigeon mostly eats fallen fruit, particularly loves figs, and also berries and insects.
Unfortunately, for years, it’s been bred in captivity; so its population is declining due to the loss of habitat and excessive hunting.
They’re a target to poachers because of their impressive feathers and their meat. This is why they’re listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List.
One of the Most Elegant Pigeons in the World
Did you know that there are more than 300 species of pigeons and doves in the world? This is definitely the most elegant species- a supermodel in the world of pigeons.
It’s a large and ground-dwelling pigeon with blue-grey feathers, a maroon chest, and a black mask and red eyes.
Its crest is also majestic- it’s clearly defined by white-tipped feathers- these plumes make it look really regal.
The bird is definitely big- it weighs up to 7.7 pounds and up to 30 inches in length so they’re quite larger than other pigeons.
For example, a common pigeon is only half as long and has less than a pound of weight. It’s a very friendly bird that loves company and you’ll see it travel in groups when foraging. It walks on the forest floor and gathers food.
