Talented Artist Makes Fantastic Sculptures from Driftwood: They Look Like Nature Spirits

Debra Bernier is an artist who makes stunning sculptures inspired by the nature that surrounds her in Victoria, Canada where she lives.

She works with driftwood and she studies the form of each piece and meticulously carves out or adds to the natural material.

The final result is a delicate feminine figure. She says that when she works with driftwood, she never begins with a blank canvas-every piece is already a sculpture that’s made by the waves and winds.

For Bernier, the wood tells its own story and she thinks of her work as a journey-she prolongs or shortens the contours or curves of people’s or animals’ faces.

Amazing Artist Makes Sculptures from Driftwood

Debra doesn’t just use driftwood-she also uses clay, stones, shells, and other objects. The sculptures, reminiscing nymphs relaxing in the forest and along sea shores; they’re a unique blend of nature and humanity.

They wake up the themes of motherhood and fertility. The usage of shells is actually a symbol of fertility in countless cultures.

She goes on to explain that the pieces reflect not just her life and her family, but also the eternal and sacred relationship we share with nature.

She sells these unique pieces on her Etsy shop. At a young age, Debra enjoyed heading to the beach and spending time in nature. She’s happy that she can still express this love through her artwork.

The little girl in her keeps on being amazed by the wood shapes, the sun’s sparkles on the water, and the salty seaweed.

For her, simplicity is happiness and she hopes that others will see this through her work.
