Forget Drive-Ins: Paris Hosts Floating Movie Theater With Socially Distant Boats On Seine River

Paris Plages or Paris Beaches opened up this year in an unusual manner- showcasing an outdoor movie on the banks of the Seine river as the city is dealing with the pandemic of COVID 19.

The MK2 Cinemas collaborated with Paris city in organizing this event.

According to CEO of MK2 Cinemas, Elisha Karmitz, it’s been years that they’ve been working on taking the cinema out of the rooms as a tool of promotion.

And, after several months of confinement, they thought they need a way to tell the world and the people that the cinemas in Paris are open.

Paris is one of the worldwide capitals of cinema. Also, they wanted to create a safe and healthy way for their people to enjoy a magnificent night with family and friends.

The Paris Plages Opens Up with a Floating Movie Theater

This Saturday, the visitors in boats watched the 2018 French comedy Le Grand Bain or on deck chairs set on the banks of the river Seine.

Some of them said they felt safer when watching an open-air screening.

Luc Bouvier, one of the attendees, said that he already went back to the cinema once wearing a mask; however, there’s still apprehension to go back.

Here, in boats on the river, Bouvier claims, there is less doubt and he feels safer.

What Is the Paris Plages?

The Paris Plages is an annual event which takes place in July and August and during this time, the roads along the river Seine are closed and the waterfront is turned into a beach front.

This event began in 2002 and was initiated by the newly-elected Socialist Mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoe, as a means of helping people cope with the high temperatures during summer in the city.
