Iceland Supermarket Adopted all Penguins to Save the Chester ZOO

In an effort to help a zoo that’s struggling, this supermarket made an amazing move.

The Chester Zoo announced recently that they had big debts or around £24 million by the end of 2020 due to the coronavirus.

They pleaded the public to help them by making donations. However, thanks to this hero, the zoo has been saved in these times of need.

The supermarket chain Iceland decided to adopt the rookery of the Humboldt penguins and relieved a part of the financial burden.

The retailer of frozen food also agreed to lobby the UK government for the zoo to change the legislation and allow zoo reopening with strict guidelines for social distancing.

The money from visitors would be essential to keeping the zoo on its feet after it’s been closed for so long.

A Childhood Memory for so Many People

The managing director of Iceland Foods, Richard Walker, said that they’re all sad to hear of the recent struggles that this zoo has been facing-this is the heart of the locals in Chester and a loved zoo among families.

He also remembers visiting the zoo while still a child and also said that his children love going there.

So, they’re more than proud to be able to help through the adoption of the penguins and by lobbying for zoo support and their reopening.

People on social media have been amazed by this supermarket’s move and a lot of them praised their efforts to help the zoo.

One person wrote that it’s pivotal we support and save our zoos whereas another one told the supermarket they’re amazing.

The Justgiving page of the Chester Zoo has passed the £2 million mark; however, they still need around £1.5m per month in order to survive.

This being said, they’ll need to do more to keep the attraction up and running.
