This Small & Remote Scottish Island Is Looking for New Residents

Lockdowns worldwide made a lot of people crave social contacts; but others realized a quieter life is better.

If you’re like those who found comfort in remote lifestyle, you should know that there’s one secluded island in Scotland that is searching for residents.

The Isle of Rum is a tiny rocky island and a neighbor with the Isle of Skye. It currently has less than 40 people living there; however, the community hopes to attract more people to become its residents.

The isle is located in the Inner Hebrides and it stretches 8 miles from end to end.

Small & Remote Island Looking for Residents to Move There

The Isle of Rum Community Trust wants residents to move into the new 4 eco homes that are currently being constructed and should be ready by the end of this month.

The 3 bed properties are on the edge of the Kinloch village that offers stunning views of the Rum Cuillin Mountain.

People with some trade, skill or other business who can help diversify and grow the local economy are invited to apply through their website.

Unfortunately, until now, it’s been hard to get people to move here; however, with the new homes, they hope they’ll motivate them to relocate.

The trust also says they offer jobs in food production, child care, housekeeping, fish farming, as well as mountain and marine tourism. They hope to be attractive enough for families with young children.

One of the residents, Lesley Watt says there are only 32 people living here and 6 children. Only one child is in nursery and two are in primary school.

So, they need more families to fill up the schools and more families to become the next generations of the island.

Rum was known in the past as the Forbidden Island and was sold to the Nature Conservancy back in 1957.

Since then, it’s become a wildlife reserve with wild goats, ponies, deer, Manx shearwaters, and white tailed eagles.
