With only Months to Live, this Indiana High School Senior Says ‘I Do’ in a Touching Ceremony

This high school senior was diagnosed with terminal cancer and told he has only months to live.

With a prognosis of three to five months of life remaining, he decided to marry his high school sweetheart, Sadie Mills, in a touching ceremony.

The high schooler Chase Smith married his girlfriend in a small ceremony that celebrated their faith and union.

Smith who’s only 19 and diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare bone cancer, said that many thought he was getting married just because of a short life prognosis, but this wasn’t the reason.

He says it was more of a ‘wake-up call from God’.

The Inspiring Story of Chase Smith

Smith was first diagnosed with cancer in 2014.

Unfortunately, the tumor came back and he was given a terminal diagnosis.

So, he thought that he has a girl he loves and his time is limited. He knew he would want to get married in the future so why not start the journey now.

He married Mills, 18, in Sadie’s Bargersville in Indiana surrounded by their families. Although they initially planned to marry after college, they said their ‘I do’s’ earlier.

Mills later said it was the best day of her life. The older sisters of the couple planned the wedding and got donations from small businesses. The event was ready in only four days, explained Kelli Smith, Smith’s mom.

She added how Chase and Sadie’s sisters are very similar and very organized. They worked really hard to get different things for the wedding ready.

Different companies and businesses donated stuff for the wedding like flowers, jewelry, and dresses. They even had fireworks that sent off the couple after the reception.

Kelli says it was amazing and gracious that so many good people opened up their businesses and got things done for the family.

What Did Chase Smith Have to Say for His Wedding Day?

Smith said that seeing his wife at the end of the aisle was the most amazing part.

He didn’t want to see her until she walks down the aisle. For him, it was a special thing and something he wanted to experience.

When he saw her, everything was blank and so many emotions were felt between them. He couldn’t tell if the music was playing or if someone else was there.

He says it was among the best moments in his life.

Wedding safety was pivotal-everyone kept social distancing and the ceremony had around 20 people in total.

The newlyweds who went to different high schools met at a swim meet and have been together ever since.

Doing Their Best to Get the most from the Time Left Together

For Mills, having Chase by her side is amazing. Whenever she needs something or someone, he’s there. So, it was natural to get married and something that was meant to happen, she believes.

Mills is planning to attend Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and commute from home. She wants to be with Smith and enjoy their time left together as much as possible.

Smith is undergoing treatment in Cleveland, Ohio. Mills has been huge support for her husband. When she sees him in pain, God is supporting them in those hard moments because they pray every morning and night.

She wants to get him feel his best and comfort him.
