While harvesting his wheat and canola farm near Crosby in North Dakota, Lane Unhjem went into a cardiac arrest when his combine caught fire.
He was immediately taken to the hospital, but his crops remained unharvested. This is where his friends, neighbors, and family members stepped in.
They wasted no time and decided to harvest it for him. Because this is what community means and helping those in need is essential for everyone to thrive.
Aren’t they amazing?
Farmer Suffers a Cardiac Arrest, Friends Step In & Harvest the Crops
Around 60 farmers from Divide County paused their own harvesting to help out Unhjem and used their equipment in the process.
A friend of the family, Jenna Binde, said that she reached out to several farmers and they gave her their equipment. Not long after, other people started calling her and offered to lend their equipment, as well as their workers.
The group that got together to help the farmer used 11 combines, six grain cars, and 15 tractor-trailers to harvest the canola and wheat. With the power of the community, they managed to harvest 1000 acres in seven hours!
The farmers who helped said that if they didn’t, Unhjem’s crops would’ve been a major loss for the family, so helping out was common sense.
They all Know the Unhjems: They Are Good People
Binde said how everyone in their community knows the Unhjems-they’re good people who’re good for the community and this was something common in the farming way of life. They help each other out without expecting anything in return.
Lane was taken to the hospital and he’s in stable condition. However, his family notes he’ll need some time to recover.
