Zane Powles is an English selfless teacher who spent every day at the start of the pandemic prepping food for his beloved students. Every single day, he would wake up and prep 85 lunches.
When we think about teachers, we think of compassion, stability, and dedication. In fact, plenty of children today rely on their educators to teach them about the many things the world offers.
And, for a lot of these kids, school is their safe haven. Powles went above and beyond during the pandemic to make sure his students feel cared for and loved.
Amazing Teacher Made 85 Meals per Day & Delivered them to His Students
Powles is an award-winning “hero” teacher in England who works at the Western Primary School in Grimsby. He spent days prepping lunch for his students. He did it because he feared that a lot of them wouldn’t have access to food during the lockdown.
For a period of 17 weeks, he would prep 85 lunches every morning and walk 7.5 miles to deliver the meals. His estimates say he’s carried around four tons of food.
For him, it was all worth it, especially after he saw the wide smiles on his students’ faces. When he began these deliveries, he was worried about the children and their well-being. He wanted to ensure he could see them all and know they’re doing well and safe.
His days began earlier than 7 am. At 7 am, he was already in the school and prepping and packing the lunches and then went onto his two-hour journey. He didn’t just deliver the meals, but also their homework.
Powles is known to have been a fierce advocate for people who live in poverty and helping kids in need. He had plans to cycle 1500 miles through the city castles and gather money for meals that would be given to children and families who’re poor.
It’s Teachers’ Obligation to Make Sure Students Are Doing Well
He said how in the summer, the struggles of the kids are invisible to them since they can’t see them, however, it’s pivotal to ensure they’re doing well.
Unfortunately, according to the Child Poverty Action Group, in the UK, there were 4.2 million kids living in poverty in the period from 2018 to 2019. In the US, according to the Children’s Defense Fund, 1 in 6 kids in America are poor.
When asked about his motivation, Powles says he’s just doing his job which is to educate and nurture kids and take good care of them. It’s his ultimate mission which hasn’t been completed yet. And, he’s planning to continue offering his help.
In an award-giving ceremony in 2019, Powles stated that we need to be mindful when working with kids and never give up on them. Their tough upbringing is never their fault.
