Orion Jean is a young boy on a mission. He’s sharing the gift of reading with hundreds of thousands of children. Although he’s only 10, the number on his mind is 500,000.
This is actually the number of books this Texas boy hopes to donate by the end of this month. He says his goal is to share the love for literacy with as many people as possible.
Jean Leads a Unique Campaign of Compassion
Last year, the boy won a student kindness contest where he displayed his campaign of compassion. He believes kindness is a virtue we can all have if we’re willing to. For him, starting now is essential because we need kindness now more than ever.
Winning these contests was the catalyst to a bigger idea. It actually brought the idea of the race to kindness.
Using his $500 prize, he bought toys that he donated to the Dallas Children’s Hospital. Also, through food drives and relief group partnering, he’s helped gather 100,000 meals for families in Texas.
His current focus is to provide books for children who may not be able to buy them. He says he feels morally obliged to help people. He believes it’s his responsibility to help these people.
When his mom Kherri was jokingly asked if there’s some 10-year-old left in her son, she said that they still have to remind him to take the dishes out of the dishwasher and feed the dog!
Jean’s Wish Is to Keep this Campaign Going for Years
So far, he’s collected 120,000 books and he’s asking for donations of used books from people all over the country.
Jean hopes that this impact he’s had is sufficient to motivate people to the race to kindness and to keep joining him in this marathon as it’s not a sprint. For him, it’s not a one-time thing, but something he hopes to continue on for years.
This is definitely an amazing goal from a kid whose heart just might be as big as he is.
