Awesome Trend: Seniors Are Buying Tiny Homes & Live their Golden Years Off the Grid

An increasing number of seniors are looking at tiny homes for their retirement days.

According to a survey from 2015, 30 percent of tiny home residents were between the ages of 51 and 70, making seniors a major part of the tiny home movement.

With the demand on the rise, so is the supply. Namely, a rising number of companies are building small residences with comforts designed for this age group.

Seniors Buy Tiny Homes & Enjoy Living their Golden Years Off the Grid

Bette Presley, in 2013 when she was 72 decided to downsize her home and forgo an RV for a tiny home after deciding she wanted to be mobile, yet have all the comforts of a home.

In her 166-square-foot cabin, she lives off the grid using solar panels and the wheels help her stay on the open road.

Another example is the story of Shirley Louiselle who wanted to downsize, more than to be on the go. She didn’t need more space and the 240-square tiny home that her grandson built for her inspired his business Next Door Housing.

More & More Companies Are Making Senior-Friendly Tiny Homes

This company includes senior-friendly details in their tiny homes like low cupboards and countertops and bathrooms accessible by wheelchairs. Other companies such as MEDCottage market their homes as alternatives to assisted living and are known as granny pods

These solutions have smart systems which remind seniors to take meds and can be bought as RVs or installed on land. It’s not just a way for seniors to live their retirement days, but some consider it a business move.

One amazing example is the Sausage Nonnas– three Italian grandmas who travel in their tiny homes and cook up a storm for an event known as Sausage Sundays.
