How to Detox the Armpits in a Week & Reduce the Risk of Breast Cancer

Detoxes and cleanses have become one of the most popular wellness options in the last decade. A lot of them are inspired by traditional practices in both alternative and complementary medicine.

Whether it’s cleansing the skin or the gut, there’s an idea that periodical detoxification of the body using healthy substances may boost the functioning of the body.

The next big thing in the world of detoxes seems to be armpit detox.

Armpit Detox Explained

Rather than consuming teas and other beverages, for an armpit detox, people are making masks and covering their armpits with them, all in the name of staying healthier and smelling fresher.

The most common ingredients for armpit detox masks include clays, charcoals, and apple cider vinegar. These components are mixed and applied onto the armpits and then the arms are kept up as the mask dries up.

These masks, supposedly, cleanse the bad chemicals that may have entered the skin from deodorant and antiperspirant products.

The detox of the armpits is believed to speed up this cleansing period by opening up the pores and removing impurities.

The Link between Deodorants & Antiperspirants & Breast Cancer?

Since these products are applied near the breasts and some of them may contain potentially harmful stuff, some scientists have pointed out a potential link between cancer and their use.

But, there’s no scientific evidence that connects breast cancer and the use of these products.

What is known is that compounds based on aluminum are used in antiperspirants. These compounds form a short-term closure in the sweat ducts and thus prevent sweating onto the surface of the skin.

There is some research pointing out that these antiperspirants that are frequently applied may be absorbed by the skin near the breasts and cause estrogen-like hormonal effects.

Since estrogen may encourage breast cancer cell growth, the aluminum-based ingredients in antiperspirants are proposed as contributors to breast cancer.

Moreover, aluminum is also claimed to directly affect the breast tissue. Despite these theories and claims, there’s no study that actually confirms any negative effects of aluminum that may elevate the risk of breast cancer.

In fact, in a 2014 review, it was concluded that there’s no clear proof that aluminum antiperspirants or cosmetics cause cancer.

Although this is the case, detoxing the armpits may still offer certain benefits and some people regularly practice it.

Best Ways to Detox the Armpits Naturally

  • Head to a sauna

When we sweat, our body removes toxins and other substances and balances out our bodily temperature.

Sauna visits can help encourage sweat and boost the detox of the body. Saunas are also beneficial for stronger immunity.

  • Drink more mineral water

Regular water consumption helps the body in the removal of toxins and decreases the risk of dehydration.

Consuming mineral water with silica may be of aid in removing aluminum from the body. This mineral water can be purchased online or in specialized shops.

  • Opt for a different deodorant

Plenty of deodorants and antiperspirants contain aluminum and other harmful components.

Always check the label prior to purchasing a product and don’t always rely on the big letters in front.

  • Try a DIY armpit detox

To ease the negative effects of continuous use of deodorants and antiperspirants, you can do the occasional armpit detox.

To prep the mask, you need a tbsp of bentonite clay, a tbsp of ACV, five drops of cilantro essential oil, and three drops of rosemary essential oil.

Mix the clay and ACV in a bowl. Wait for a bit before adding the essential oil and make a smooth mixture.

Apply a thin layer of the mask on the armpits and keep them open. Wash it off after 20 minutes.

For optimal results, do the treatment for a week, every day.
