Purest Joy: Grandma Earns a College Degree at the Age of 84

Almost seven decades after she started college, this 84-year-old woman graduated from university and proved that it’s never too late to achieve our goals.

Betty Sandison enrolled at the University of Minnesota some 67 years ago; however, she put a pause on her education due to getting married and life getting in the way.

However, she never lost the wish to graduate. And, so she did.

Grandma Aged 84 Graduates from University, Proving Everyone That It’s Never too Late

Recently, she graduated with a degree in multidisciplinary studies at the impressive age of 84. She said that it was pure joy and satisfaction that she achieved her lifelong goal.

Sandison left Renville, a small farm town in Minnesota back in 1955 as the first person in her family to attend college.

She wanted to finish a program to become a nurse which lasted for a year and she accomplished it. She kept taking courses; however, she didn’t graduate and went in a different way after meeting her husband.

She was short of graduating for some 25 to 28 points. After she got married and raised two daughters and with a decades-long career in nursing, she retired in 2013.

One day, while at lunch with friends, they started talking about bucket lists and she said how it was always her wish to graduate from university.

And, this was the moment when she decided to do something about it; she enrolled at university in the autumn of 2018. But, this second time was quite different than when she did it so many years ago.

The campus was so much bigger and there was the obstacle of technology.

And, during the peak of the pandemic in 2020, when all went online, she was on the verge of abandoning her goal. However, she kept going and pushing and finally succeeded. She graduated and took her degree, showing her loved ones and the whole world that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams.

She said at the ceremony that you need to do what you want and go in the direction of your goals, without allowing others and obstacles from stopping you.

The newly-graduated Sandison isn’t sure what’s the next thing; however, she’s already brainstorming new ideas that she can pursue.

And, we wish you all the luck in this world, Sandison! You’re a true inspiration.
