Summer is on our doorstep and we’re all excited for warmer and longer days with plenty of sunshine.

But, don’t get disappointed right away.

The good news is that there’s a simple, yet effective way to say goodbye to smelly shoes caused by sweaty feet during summer. You already probably have the star ingredient of this DIY solution in your kitchen cabinet so you’re only missing the recipe.

Let’s check it out!

How to Prevent Smelly Shoes: DIY Shoe Powder with Baking Soda

If your shoes are smelly or if summer is just around the corner, this DIY shoe powder with baking soda is what you need to make things right.

Let’s take a look at the necessary ingredients:

½ cup of cornstarch

¼ cup of baking soda

¼ cup of baking powder

5 drops of essential oil (optional)

An empty powder container

Preparation:

Open the powder container and add all of the ingredients inside. Close it well and shake it so that the ingredients combine well.

How to use it:

Sprinkle a pinch in each shoe and tap it at the heel and then at the toe to distribute the powder throughout the entire shoe.

You can do this every morning, before heading out for your day.

Helpful Tips to Prevent Smelly Shoes

  • Air out the shoes regularly: open the laces and put the shoes in a sunny area (the sun is a natural disinfectant)
  • Don’t wear the same shoes every day. By alternating your shoes, you give the other pairs time to air out and dry entirely
  • Wear socks with the shoes whenever possible because the socks will absorb the surplus moisture associated with foul smell in your shoes
  • Remove wet parts of a shoe if you can and air-dry the shoe in a warm spot or a clothes dryer set on low heat
