Most people think of a urinary tract infection as something connected to hygiene, sexual activity, dehydration, or simply bad luck.
But scientists are uncovering another possible source that may surprise you:
The bacteria behind some UTIs may begin their journey on raw meat sitting in your kitchen.
Research has found genetic links between certain strains of Escherichia coli found in chicken, turkey, pork, and other meats and the E. coli responsible for urinary tract infections in humans. More recent research has strengthened that connection, suggesting that food-animal strains may account for a meaningful share of E. coli UTIs.
That doesn’t mean eating chicken will automatically give you a UTI. The story is more complicated—and far more interesting.
The Surprising Connection Between E. coli, Meat and UTIs
E. coli has an unusual reputation.
Most strains live harmlessly in the intestines of humans and animals. But certain strains can travel outside the digestive tract and cause infections elsewhere in the body—including the bladder and kidneys.
These disease-causing strains are often referred to as extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli, or ExPEC. They are major causes of urinary tract infections.
A 2023 study used genomic analysis to distinguish E. coli originating in humans from strains associated with food animals. Researchers estimated that approximately 8% of human extraintestinal E. coli infections in the population studied were associated with food-animal strains. When extrapolated to the United States, the researchers estimated that this could represent roughly 480,000 to 640,000 UTIs each year.
Then came an even larger investigation.
Newer Research Suggests the Link Could Be Even Bigger
A 2025 study published in mBio analyzed E. coli from retail meat and UTI patients across eight counties in Southern California.
Researchers collected more than 12,600 E. coli isolates from retail meat and more than 23,000 from people with UTIs, then genetically analyzed a representative subset of 5,728 samples.
Their conclusion was striking:
About 17.7% of the clinical E. coli isolates were estimated to have originated from food animals.
In other words, nearly 1 in 5 E. coli UTIs in that study population may have involved bacteria with an animal origin.
The researchers also found that the percentage was higher among women than men and reached 21.5% among people living in higher-poverty neighborhoods. The study does not prove that a specific meal directly caused an individual UTI, but it provides strong genomic evidence that food animals may be an underrecognized reservoir for UTI-causing bacteria.
So How Could Chicken Possibly Cause a Bladder Infection?
The mechanism is not as simple as eating contaminated meat and immediately developing burning urination.
A more plausible pathway looks like this:
Raw meat → hands or kitchen surfaces → digestive tract → intestinal colonization → urinary tract
During slaughter and meat processing, bacteria from an animal’s intestinal tract can contaminate meat.
If contaminated meat is undercooked—or bacteria spread from raw meat onto your hands, cutting boards, knives, salad ingredients, sinks, or countertops—the bacteria can enter your digestive system.
Once certain E. coli strains establish themselves in the intestine, they may later reach the area around the urethra. From there, bacteria can travel upward into the urinary tract and cause infection.
The CDC explains that UTIs commonly develop when bacteria originating from the skin or rectal area enter the urethra and move into the urinary system.
So the real issue may not be simply whether you eat meat.
It may also be how you handle it.
Poultry Deserves Special Attention
Chicken and turkey have repeatedly attracted attention in research investigating food-animal E. coli.
In the Southern California study, researchers analyzed hundreds of isolates from chicken, turkey, pork, and beef purchased in the same communities where UTI samples were collected. Genetic patterns helped researchers distinguish strains associated with food animals from those associated primarily with humans.
This is important because raw poultry is notoriously easy to cross-contaminate around the kitchen.
And one common kitchen habit can actually make the problem worse.
Stop washing raw chicken
Many people rinse chicken because they believe it removes germs.
It doesn’t.
USDA research found that washing raw poultry can spread bacteria through splashing and increase cross-contamination of sinks, countertops, utensils, and ready-to-eat foods. In one USDA experiment, bacteria from raw poultry were transferred to salad ingredients during meal preparation.
Cooking is what destroys harmful bacteria—not rinsing with water, vinegar, salt water, or lemon juice.
USDA food-safety guidance recommends cooking all poultry to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C), measured with a food thermometer.
Protect Your Urinary Health Starting in the Kitchen
This research gives UTI prevention an interesting new dimension.
Along with traditional urinary-health habits, reducing your exposure to potentially harmful E. coli may make sense.
When preparing meat:
- Keep raw poultry and meat away from salads, fruits, and cooked foods.
- Use separate cutting boards when possible.
- Wash your hands thoroughly after touching raw meat.
- Clean and sanitize surfaces that contact raw meat or its juices.
- Don’t wash raw chicken.
- Cook poultry to 165°F/74°C internally.
These habits are already recommended for preventing foodborne illness. The emerging UTI research suggests they may have another potential benefit: reducing exposure to E. coli strains capable of causing infections beyond the gut.
Natural Ways to Support Urinary Tract Health
A holistic approach should focus primarily on prevention rather than attempting to “kill” a serious infection naturally.
Stay properly hydrated
Water helps maintain normal urine flow and regular bladder emptying. The CDC recommends staying well hydrated as one strategy for lowering UTI risk.
Don’t regularly hold your urine
Regular bladder emptying may help reduce the opportunity for bacteria to persist in the urinary tract.
Urinate after sexual activity
This is also included among CDC’s preventive recommendations, particularly because sexual activity is a recognized UTI risk factor.
Consider cranberry for recurrent UTI prevention
Cranberries contain proanthocyanidins, compounds studied for their ability to interfere with bacterial adhesion.
A large 2023 Cochrane review found evidence that cranberry products can reduce the risk of symptomatic, culture-confirmed UTIs in some groups, including women with recurrent UTIs. Cranberry should be considered a preventive strategy, however—not a substitute for treating an established infection.
Be cautious about relying on D-mannose
D-mannose has become extremely popular in natural UTI products, but newer evidence is less impressive than earlier studies suggested.
A 2024 randomized clinical trial found that daily D-mannose did not significantly prevent recurrent UTIs among women treated in primary care. That means it should not be marketed as a proven replacement for medical treatment.
Know the Warning Signs of a UTI
A bladder infection may cause:
Burning or pain while urinating, frequent urination, urinary urgency, blood in the urine, and pressure or cramping in the lower abdomen or groin.
When an infection reaches the kidneys, symptoms may include fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, and pain in the lower back or side. Kidney infections can become serious and need prompt medical attention.
And this is where natural medicine needs an important boundary.
Herbs, cranberry, hydration, teas, or supplements should not be used to delay diagnosis or appropriate treatment of a suspected bacterial UTI. The CDC states that antibiotics are commonly used to treat UTIs and that medical evaluation is appropriate when symptoms develop.
The Bigger Lesson: Your Gut, Food and Urinary Tract Are More Connected Than We Thought
Perhaps the most fascinating part of this research is what it tells us about the human body.
Your urinary tract does not exist in isolation.
The bacteria you encounter through food, the microorganisms living in your intestine, your kitchen environment, your hygiene habits, and your urinary health may all be connected.
Scientists still need more research to determine exactly how often contaminated food directly leads to infection. The 2025 findings are particularly important, but they describe a Southern California population and should not automatically be generalized to every country or every UTI.
Still, the evidence is becoming difficult to ignore.
Some E. coli UTIs may have origins far beyond the bathroom.
They may begin at the farm, travel through the food supply, enter the kitchen—and eventually find their way into the human urinary tract.
And that makes careful food handling one more powerful reason to treat your kitchen as an important part of preventive health.
