Papaya Seeds and Honey for Intestinal Parasites: What the Research Really Found

A spoonful of papaya seeds and honey sounds more like an old-fashioned kitchen remedy than something scientists would put through a clinical study. Yet that is exactly what happened—and the results were intriguing enough to keep papaya seeds on the radar of natural-health researchers.

In a small randomized pilot study, children with laboratory-confirmed intestinal parasites were given either a preparation containing dried papaya seeds and honey or honey alone. Seven days later, parasite clearance was substantially more common in the papaya-seed group.

It is an attention-grabbing finding, but there is an important catch: this was a small study published in 2007, and it does not establish papaya seeds and honey as a replacement for properly diagnosed and medically treated parasitic infections.

So what did researchers actually discover—and what should you know before turning this intriguing food into a DIY “parasite cleanse”?

The Small Study Behind the Papaya Seed Buzz

The study involved 60 Nigerian children who had intestinal parasites identified through stool microscopy.

Researchers randomly divided them into two groups. Thirty received a single 20-mL preparation made from air-dried, ground Carica papaya seeds and honey, while 30 received honey alone.

Seven days later, stool samples were examined again.

The difference was striking:

  • 23 of 30 children (76.7%) receiving papaya seeds with honey had stools cleared of detectable parasites.
  • 5 of 30 children (16.7%) receiving honey alone had the same result.

Those numbers understandably attract attention.

But they require context.

What the Study Does—and Doesn’t—Prove

This was a pilot study, not the kind of large, multicenter clinical trial normally needed to establish a new medical treatment.

It included only 60 participants, followed them for a short period, and evaluated a particular preparation and dose.

The authors themselves called for larger studies comparing papaya seeds directly with standard antiparasitic medicines.

That means we can reasonably say:

Papaya seeds showed promising antiparasitic activity in this small human study.

We cannot reasonably conclude:

Papaya seeds and honey are a proven replacement for antiparasitic medication.

That distinction is especially important because “parasites” are not one disease.

Intestinal Parasites Are Not All the Same

The term intestinal parasite covers numerous organisms.

They include worms such as:

  • Ascaris
  • hookworms
  • whipworms

as well as protozoan parasites such as:

  • Giardia
  • Entamoeba histolytica
  • Cryptosporidium

Different organisms require different diagnostic tests and sometimes completely different treatments.

Symptoms can also overlap with many non-parasitic digestive disorders.

Bloating, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, gas, fatigue, nausea, or changes in bowel habits do not automatically mean someone has parasites.

The CDC notes that diagnosis can require stool examinations, antigen testing, blood tests, or other investigations depending on the suspected infection. For some stool-based testing, multiple samples collected on different days may be needed because parasites are not necessarily detected in every specimen.

That is one reason self-diagnosing a “parasite problem” based solely on symptoms can be misleading.

Why Are Papaya Seeds Interesting?

Papaya seeds are far more chemically complex than their appearance suggests.

One compound researchers have investigated is benzyl isothiocyanate, a naturally occurring phytochemical believed to contribute to the seeds’ anthelmintic activity.

Papaya seeds also contain other plant compounds, fats, and phytochemicals that continue to be investigated.

The important point is that the seeds’ biological activity is plausible enough to justify research.

But “biologically active” also means concentrated or excessive amounts should not automatically be assumed safe.

Another Study Produced Interesting Results

The 2007 pilot trial was not the only human research involving papaya seeds and intestinal worms.

A later preliminary school-based study involved 326 children and investigated food fortified with ground papaya seeds.

Children consuming papaya-seed-fortified porridge experienced a 63.9% reduction in Ascaris lumbricoides egg count over two months.

For comparison, the albendazole group experienced a 78.8% reduction.

That does not establish equivalence between papaya seeds and albendazole—the study design and evidence are not strong enough for such a conclusion.

It does, however, strengthen the argument that papaya seeds deserve additional clinical research.

What Role Does the Honey Play?

Honey makes the bitter, peppery taste of papaya seeds considerably easier to tolerate.

In the original pilot study, honey also served as the control, meaning the experiment was designed to help determine whether the observed difference came from the papaya-seed preparation rather than simply from honey.

Because the honey-only group had a much lower clearance rate, the results suggest the papaya seeds were an important component of the observed effect.

That doesn’t mean honey itself “kills intestinal parasites.”

Honey contains numerous bioactive compounds and has well-established uses in areas such as wound care, but extrapolating those properties into an intestinal parasite treatment would require separate evidence.

Does This Combination “Cleanse the Gut”?

This is where social-media terminology can become misleading.

Your digestive tract does not require routine parasite cleanses.

If someone actually has a pathogenic parasite, the appropriate goal is to identify the organism and treat the infection, not perform a vague “detox.”

For soil-transmitted intestinal worms, established antiparasitic medicines include drugs such as albendazole and mebendazole. Depending on the organism, treatment may last only one to three days and can be highly effective.

Other parasites require different medications.

Papaya seeds should therefore be viewed as an interesting area of botanical research, rather than a universal parasite treatment.

What About Digestive Health?

Fresh ripe papaya itself can certainly be part of a gut-friendly diet.

Papaya provides fiber, water, vitamin C, carotenoids, and other plant compounds. The fruit also contains proteolytic enzymes, including papain.

But digestive health is rarely about finding one magical ingredient.

A healthier gut environment generally benefits from everyday habits such as eating a varied diet containing vegetables, fruit, legumes, nuts, seeds, and other fiber-rich foods; drinking adequate fluids; staying physically active; sleeping consistently; and limiting unnecessary highly processed foods.

Fermented foods such as plain yogurt or kefir may also be useful for some people who tolerate them.

These habits support general digestive health, but they do not eradicate a diagnosed parasitic infection.

How to Reduce Your Risk of Intestinal Worms

Prevention is far less glamorous than a viral parasite-cleanse recipe—but it is considerably more useful.

The CDC recommends practical measures including washing hands before handling food, thoroughly washing or preparing fruits and vegetables, avoiding potentially fecally contaminated water or soil, and wearing shoes where hookworm-contaminated soil may be present.

Food hygiene becomes particularly important when traveling in areas where intestinal parasites are common.

Should You Eat Papaya Seeds Every Day?

There is not enough high-quality human research to establish an ideal long-term medicinal dose of papaya seeds.

That matters.

Who Should Be Particularly Careful?

Pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid experimenting with medicinal quantities of papaya seeds unless specifically advised by a healthcare professional because adequate human safety data are lacking.

Caution is also appropriate for:

  • children
  • people trying to conceive
  • anyone with papaya or latex allergy
  • people with chronic gastrointestinal disease
  • anyone taking prescription medication
  • people considering concentrated papaya-seed extracts

Animal research involving papaya and reproductive health has generated enough uncertainty that medicinal use during pregnancy deserves particular caution. Research on papaya latex has also demonstrated uterine-contracting effects in experimental models, although this should not be confused with normal consumption of ripe papaya fruit.

When Digestive Symptoms Need Medical Attention

Persistent diarrhea, unexplained weight loss, blood in the stool, significant abdominal pain, anemia, fever, dehydration, persistent vomiting, or digestive symptoms following international travel should not be managed with a homemade cleanse alone.

The Bottom Line

Papaya seeds are one of those traditional foods where modern research has uncovered something genuinely interesting.

A randomized pilot study found that a preparation of dried papaya seeds and honey was associated with substantially greater parasite clearance than honey alone in children with confirmed intestinal parasites. Later research has provided additional preliminary evidence suggesting papaya seeds may have activity against certain intestinal worms.

But promising research is not the same thing as established treatment.

We still need larger, better-controlled clinical trials to determine which parasites may respond, what preparation works best, what dose is appropriate, how long treatment should last, whether infections recur, and how papaya seeds compare directly with modern antiparasitic medicines.

For now, the most sensible approach is to appreciate papaya seeds as a fascinating subject of traditional medicine meeting modern research—without turning preliminary evidence into a miracle cure.
