Foods to avoid if you have eczema

According to Ayurveda, the food we consume affect almost every aspect of our life; the way we respond to stress, our mood, and even our skin health. Food affects our nerves, blood, muscles, bones, and even our sexual energy. According to Ayurvedic practice, the food we consume is the main culprit behind many illnesses and disorders, including eczema.

Ayurveda is based on doshas, as you probably know by now. Our health is dependent on the balance of the three doshas, and eczema is believed to be caused by pitta dosha aggravation. An inflammatory response is made by our body, due to a threat being discovered, and this causes a reaction on the skin surface. The reaction usually starts with redness and dryness, which are common Vata characteristics.

As mentioned multiple times before, food is what causes this type of reaction, and increases inflammation, causing eczema. Here are some foods that you need to avoid in order to prevent and/or treat eczema:

  1. Eggs

Our immune systems can often be confused and overwhelmed when it comes to dealing with eczema. The system is compromised, and cannot figure out how to deal with the issue. This can cause our immune system to consider different proteins as threats, and one of those proteins is found in eggs. When the immune system attacks the “invader” it causes an unnecessary inflammatory response.

  • Processed foods

A majority of frozen, or packaged processed food are filled with preservatives, in order to increase the shelf life of the product. Some of the preservatives commonly used in the food industry are known to cause skin rashes. One of those is propylene glycol, commonly found in ice cream, yogurts, cakes, beer, baking mixes, etc. Healing your body requires a healthy diet and avoiding the processed stuff that can harm, and even kill you.

  • Dairy

Old Ayurvedic books and guides represent cows and their milk as sacred and precious. However, it is impossible to compare the cows of thousands of years ago, and the cows of today which are fed totally different food. It is estimated that cow’s milk has 25 allergen molecules, all of which can cause rashes, and even more serious effects.

  • Refined sugar

The harmfulness of refined sugar to our organism is not supposed to be a surprise for anyone, as we have known about it for more than 50 years. Our body simply isn’t made to digest it, and there’s barely anything nutritious in it that it can absorb, so it handles it poorly. Consuming refined sugar increases the production of insulin, rushing sugar to our cells. This causes a temporary burst of energy which last no time at all, and leaves us cranky and worn-out. Avoiding soda, candy, and even white rice is suggested by Ayurveda.

The foods that you should consume if you’re suffering from eczema, or if you want to improve your overall health are: bell peppers, carrots, sweet potatoes, fermented veggies, nuts and seeds, celery, and kale. These foods are all rich in nutrients, such as vitamin B and C, magnesium, glycine, as well as in antioxidants and probiotics.
