This Man Designed an Off-Road Wheelchair for His Wife to Visit Places

Most people love visiting amazing places worldwide, including beaches, mountains, national parks, amusement parks, etc.

But, not everyone is able to this and the reasons are numerous. In addition to the financial costs of travelling, some people are also physically unable to go to these places.

Some of them are prevented because of partial paralysis and bound to a wheelchair. This is also the case with one woman named Cambry who’s been restricted to pavements for most of her life.

But, her boyfriend, Zack Nelson, decided to do something unforgettable for her and help her visit more places.

His DIY project went viral.

Man Designs Off-Road Wheelchair for Paralyzed Girlfriend

Nelson decided to splice together 2 electric bikes and placed a seat in the center.

Cambry loved it right away-she said she felt a new type of freedom with it. She could easily overcome obstacles that seemed difficult and impossible before.

She was able to drive it for miles without soreness in the shoulders. After a year, the couple got married and they also began mass-producing the brainchild vehicle they named Not-a-Wheelchair.

The couple is successfully selling this off-road wheelchair designed for people who’re paralyzed and want to travel.

Not Many Options on the Market

The couple notes that when opting for an off-roader, people have basically only several options. However, they’re either overpriced or very slow.

This is why they built something that has a long range and it’s quick and light. But, getting there wasn’t easy at all.

The most challenging part about their wheelchair was the price. They wanted to make the product available for everyone; however, finding good elements and a simple design for the cheapest price took some time.

Still, they managed to build something that everyone can enjoy- at least at the fraction of the cost for other similar off-road wheelchairs on the market.

This isn’t an indoor wheelchair, so you still need to use your regular wheelchair indoors. You can use this one for the park, for hikes, etc.

The wheelchair is fully electric and very quiet and it can go 12 mph. Its range is 10 to 20 miles per battery and 25 to 35 miles with 2 batteries.

Still, this depends on the terrain, the rider’s weight, and the cargo. The space on the back allows you to store some camping gear, your food basket, a cooler, etc.

However, although the wheelchair is good on most terrains, it may struggle with loose sand or snow, same as a bike would.

The basic model without suspension and one battery can be bought for $3,750.
