70s Volkswagen Beetles Converted into RV Hybrids Called “Bug Campers”

Volkswagen is probably best known for its iconic Beetle. This curvy and cute car was the first model that the company made back in the 30s.

In German, Volkswagen means “the people’s car” and it was built as an efficient, yet inexpensive vehicle for everyday families and was ideal for the city streets.

Although the car tech started improving over the years, the silhouette of the loved Beetle remained mostly the same.

However, despite the commitment to its unique design, a lot of car owners in the 70s wanted to challenge the function of this practical car and take it from the urban streets to off-road locations.

This need led to the creation of the Super Bugger-a vehicle that’s a cross between the Beetle and an RV. This eye-catching bug camper still exists today and it’s apparently quite popular amongst Volkswagen

The Super Bugger: A Blend of Urban & Off-Road

The Super Bugger was invented by a third-party company that made and sold the car for $6000 in 1975. Using fiberglass paneling, they constructed a small living space behind the two front seats that sufficed to make road trips comfier.

Interestingly, a couple who’s maintained their camper ever since showed it off during a car show in 2016.

Their Super Bugger had a tiny interior and a small kitchen inside, without any bed space. However, if there are those who want to sleep under the stars, this bug camper had and still does offer that chance and some convenience on longer trips.

This iconic vehicle known as the RV hybrid or bug camper is an awesome option for road trips and still holds some of the magic of the Beetle, don’t you agree?
