As part of their effort to decrease the plastic waste that’s polluting our precious oceans and planet, governments from all over the world are putting a ban on single-use plastics.
These tiny items like cutlery, cups, plastic bags, and balloons can stay polluting the oceans and marine life for hundreds of years.
With this in mind, the UK has decided to join the growing list of countries like New Zealand, Canada, and India and announced their pledge to ban the production and use of this type of plastics.
Making Progress to Reduce Plastic Pollution Is Pivotal
Although the Environment Bill is still unofficial, if it passes through Parliament, it will be the newest move by the UK government to decrease the use of plastics.
According to Environment Secretary George Eustice, they’ve made significant progress to turn the tide on plastic and prohibit the supply of plastic cutlery, straws, and cotton buds. Moreover, their charge of carrier bags in supermarkets has helped cut its sales by 95 percent!
This plan, Eustice believes, will help them remove unnecessary plastic use that’s causing a real mess in the environment.
Even though it may take until April 2023 for this ban to come into force, it’s a major move in the ongoing war on plastic. Moreover, the UK government is planning a tax on plastic packaging which will fine the plastics that aren’t made of at least 30 percent recycled content.
These decisions will hopefully motivate people and businesses to find more sustainable options and reduce the pollution that’s happening in our precious environment.
