High School Footballers Shovel Snow for their Neighbors for Free as Part of their Workout

This school from western Pennsylvania has a football team that is getting a lot of praise lately after their coach canceled the boys’ weightlifting session and instructed them to shovel driveways for people in need after a snowstorm hit the area.

The high school, Bethel Park, has a football coach Brian DeLallo who thought helping out their neighbors in need would be much more rewarding for the footballers rather than weightlifting or squats.

According to DeLallo, the boys got much more out of the shoveling than from bench-pressing 300 pounds. It’s really cool and a great opportunity for connecting with the community.

After the snowstorm hit the area on a Sunday, DeLallo informed his team on Twitter that their regular workout was canceled because of the weather and wrote the call for action.

He asked the team to find a disabled or elderly neighbor and offer them to shovel their driveway, but in no way should they ask for or accept money. This would be their workout, emphasized DeLallo.

The team had a day off from school due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day. At least 25 players shoveled their neighbors’ driveways.

Shoveling Snow Is a Decade-Long Tradition for Bethel Park High School

One of the players and captain of the team, Gavin Moul, said how some people rejected their service when they told them they don’t accept money. On the other hand, 83-year-old Danny Varhola was happy to have his driveway shoveled by the boys.

He said that he’s been living there for 50 years and that the guys did a great job.

DeLallo notes that helping snowed-in neighbors is a decade-long tradition for the high school’s football team. The original idea was of a coach who worked at the school some 25 years ago.
