What Is Reiki & How It Can Heal People

Reiki is a technique of energy healing that encourages relaxation, decreases stress, and alleviates anxiety.

All of this is done through the simple gesture of a gentle touch. The practitioners of this technique deliver energy using their hands to the body of the other person.

This touch is said to boost the blood flow and balance the energy, all in an effort to contribute to healing.

The History of Reiki

Reiki was developed in the early 1900s by Mikao Usui. It’s inspired by the Japanese words rei and ki which mean universal and vital life force energy, respectively.

Today, reiki is practiced throughout the world, including in hospices and hospitals as an additional health therapy. Reiki helps people balance their energy on a physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual level.

How Can Reiki Sessions Help Your Health & Well-Being?

According to studies, reiki contributes to a feeling of relaxation, security, wellness, and peace.

However, reiki is in no way a replacement for therapy from your physician or other medical doctors.

Reiki can also help people who’re already in good health by boosting their capacity to manage stress. Reiki is said to offer the following benefits for people’s health:

  • Alleviates tension and pain
  • Brings you into a meditative state of mind
  • Supports the healing of bones and tissues after injuries and surgeries
  • Stimulates the immunity
  • Encourages self-healing
  • Supports the health of people receiving treatments like chemo, radiation, dialysis, etc.

Reiki is said to be a universal life force energy and it works on the whole self, including the body, mind, and feelings.

Reiki may be of aid for people with chronic ache, cancer, infertility, Parkinson’s, digestive issues, anxiety, depression, etc.

What Happens During a Session of Reiki?

A session of reiki lasts around 50 minutes. During it, the person lies on a massage table, fully clothed.

The practitioner puts their hands, gently, with the palms down, in certain energy locations. Usually, they will use a series of 12 to 15 hand placements.

The duration of the hand being in a certain location depends on the flow of energy through their hands.

Unlike some other touch therapies, reiki doesn’t involve any pressure, manipulation, or massage.

When reiki is being practiced on you, you may feel the energy in form of heat, pulses, or a tingling sensation. Some people may feel sensations in the body whereas others feel no change at all.
