This former teacher decided to leave his school job and make more money as a manager at Walmart.
Despite a non-traditional career path, the former teacher Seth Goshorn said he decided to do it for a pay increase of around $20K after bonuses.
He says that he made $43K for one year as a teacher. Although it’s not bad at all, the desires are big, explained Goshorn.
As a teacher in Ohio, you can have a median salary of around $64K. Nationally, the average teacher salary is $61,730. On the other hand, Walmart store managers make around $175K per year.
The Transition Went Smoothly, Said Goshorn
Goshorn who used to be an elementary teacher in Canton for six years is now a Walmart coach on the management track. He said of the career shift that it went pretty smooth.
Although his degree doesn’t translate, the skills of many teachers and their leadership skills do apply in various companies.
He advises others to find companies that want to give them the needed training for a better-paid position. He adds that educators need additional support through higher salaries. Although teachers are scheduled for 40 hours, teachers in reality work so much more after school.
For example, he used to teach football and track. During summer, he did summer school. He didn’t have as much time as others think teachers have.
Despite making a career change, Goshorn says that he’s a lifelong teacher. He explains that teaching is forever a part of his life.
When speaking about his career change on social media, people comment that they also did a similar or the same thing. One of the followers said that he left teaching to become an operations manager to double his teaching pay.
Not Everyone Agrees People Should Abandon Teaching
Some people don’t think leaving teaching for bigger pay is justifiable. Teaching, they believe, pays off in later years. Higher steps in the teaching world can be achieved with investment in education.
Others praised the satisfaction of impacting young lives through teaching and they said this profession is priceless.
