A homeless family was found living in an improvised campground in Arizona with 150 dogs. All of the dogs were well cared for, said the officials who were there.
This bizarre hoarding lifestyle was discovered near Surprise city off US 60. The founder of the Phoenix Sky Sanctuary Rescue, Elli Smith, was called about an emergency in Northwest Valley.
She was told that a family was residing in a desert on state land and had 150 dogs living with them. They needed help with accommodating the dogs since the family was informed that they’ll have to leave the location.
Homeless Family with 150 Dogs Evicted from State Property
According to Smith who went to the location, the entire situation was sad, both for the people and the animals.
The family and the dogs lived in the location for almost a year. They endured high heat and monsoon storms.
Despite this harsh situation, the dogs were in a good condition, more or less. This was surprising, according to the director of the rescue, Caitlin Beall. When they arrived there, all of the dogs were fed and they were socialized and happy.
Usually, you meet scared animals at such locations; however, this wasn’t the case and it showed how much the people cared for the animals.
The Sanctuary & the Sheriff’s Office Help Out with some of the Animals
The rescue was able to take in 55 of the dogs. They got the medical care they needed and then were set up for adoption.
However, the number of dogs they took in this time was around five times more than what they usually take in at once.
The rest of the dogs were taken in by the sheriff’s office and were also placed for adoption. Smith explained that it was a difficult day, but it was the start of real work.
The next goal is to find fosters and adopters for the animals. They will also have to get supplies and care for the dogs until each of them finds a forever home.
What about the Family Who Cared for the Dogs?
According to the spokesperson for the sheriff, the family who cared for the dogs won’t be facing any criminal charges. They are reportedly already accommodated in a new home.
The next step is for all of the dogs to find a home as well. The officials didn’t reveal any more information or details about the family and what were the reasons for their homelessness or why did they have so many dogs on site.
According to Smith, it’s heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time to see that people with little took such good care of animals.
