Beetroot juice has become one of the most talked-about natural remedies for high blood pressure. Social media posts often claim that one glass can “open the arteries,” dramatically lower blood pressure, or even replace medication.
The reality is more encouraging—and more nuanced.
Clinical research suggests that nitrate-rich beetroot juice may produce a modest reduction in systolic blood pressure, especially in some people with hypertension. However, the response varies widely, the effect is not guaranteed, and beetroot should be viewed as a supportive dietary strategy rather than a substitute for prescribed treatment.
Why Beetroot May Affect Blood Pressure
Beetroot is naturally rich in inorganic nitrate. After nitrate is consumed, bacteria in the mouth convert part of it into nitrite. The body can then convert nitrite into nitric oxide, a signaling molecule that helps blood vessels relax and widen.
When blood vessels become more flexible and less constricted, blood can move through them with less resistance. This is the primary reason researchers have investigated beetroot juice as a possible nutritional aid for blood-pressure management.
This pathway also explains why the bacteria in your mouth matter. Research has found that antibacterial mouthwash can reduce oral nitrate conversion and weaken some of nitrate’s vascular effects. One study involving people treated for hypertension found that antibacterial mouthwash reduced nitrate conversion and was associated with increased blood pressure.
That does not mean you should stop using a mouthwash prescribed by a dentist. It simply demonstrates that beetroot’s effect involves the oral microbiome—not only digestion in the stomach.
What Do the Best Studies Show?
The strongest evidence does not suggest that beetroot produces a dramatic or universal reduction in blood pressure. Instead, the research points toward a small-to-moderate effect, particularly on the top blood-pressure number.
Systolic pressure appears to respond more consistently
Systolic blood pressure is the upper number in a reading. It represents the pressure in the arteries while the heart is contracting.
A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials involving people with hypertension found that nitrate from beetroot juice lowered systolic blood pressure by approximately 5 mmHg compared with control treatments. The reduction in diastolic pressure—the lower number—was less than 1 mmHg and was not statistically significant.
A 2024 systematic review focused specifically on adults with hypertension also concluded that daily nitrate-rich beetroot juice may lower clinical systolic blood pressure. The interventions supplied approximately 200–800 mg of nitrate per day and lasted for periods of up to 90 days. However, the authors rated the certainty of the evidence as low and advised that the findings be interpreted cautiously.
The same review did not find convincing evidence that beetroot produced a sustained improvement in 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure. This matters because a measurement taken in a clinic or shortly after drinking beetroot juice may not reflect blood pressure throughout an entire day and night.
Some Trials Have Found Impressive Results
One influential randomized, double-blind trial gave people with hypertension nitrate-rich beetroot juice daily for four weeks. The researchers reported reductions in clinic, home, and ambulatory blood-pressure measurements, with the effect continuing throughout the intervention.
Other controlled studies have also found reductions in blood pressure following nitrate-rich beetroot juice, including trials involving adults with elevated blood pressure and older overweight participants.
These findings suggest that beetroot is not simply a wellness myth. Its nitrate content has measurable biological effects, and certain individuals appear to respond meaningfully.
But Other Studies Have Found Little or No Benefit
Not every well-designed study has produced positive results.
A 2024 randomized, placebo-controlled crossover trial studied older adults with medically treated hypertension. Participants received a single nitrate dose and then approximately 800 mg of nitrate daily through beetroot juice for four weeks. Although nitrate and nitrite levels increased, researchers found no meaningful improvement in home blood pressure, 24-hour blood pressure, or vascular function compared with placebo.
An earlier study of treated hypertensive adults also reported no significant blood-pressure reduction after one week of beetroot juice.
These conflicting results are important. Beetroot does not work equally well for everyone, and increasing the dose does not automatically produce a greater benefit.
Why Do People Respond Differently?
Individual responses to beetroot nitrate can vary considerably. A 2025 analysis found substantial differences between participants, even when they consumed the same nitrate-rich beetroot supplement. Some experienced noticeable reductions, while others showed little change.
Possible reasons include:
- baseline blood pressure;
- age and vascular health;
- oral bacterial composition;
- use of antihypertensive medication;
- usual dietary nitrate intake;
- differences in nitrate absorption and conversion;
- the nitrate concentration of the product;
- how and when blood pressure is measured.
People with higher starting blood pressure may have more room for improvement, but even among people with hypertension, the response remains unpredictable.
Beetroot Juice, Whole Beets, or Powder?
Most clinical research has used nitrate-rich beetroot juice, often with a nitrate-depleted version of the same juice as the placebo. This allows researchers to test whether nitrate—not merely beetroot’s color, flavor, vitamins, or antioxidants—is responsible for the effect.
Whole beets are nutritious and can contribute dietary nitrate, fiber, folate, potassium, and plant pigments. However, the nitrate content of whole beets varies according to growing conditions, storage, preparation, and serving size. Therefore, the results of a standardized beetroot-juice trial cannot automatically be applied to a few slices of cooked beetroot.
Beetroot powders vary even more. A product may contain beetroot but provide very little nitrate unless the label specifies the nitrate amount. “One scoop” is not a scientifically meaningful dose when the nitrate concentration is unknown.
How Much Beetroot Juice Did Studies Use?
There is no universally established therapeutic dose.
The 2024 meta-analysis found that studies in people with hypertension commonly provided approximately 200–800 mg of nitrate per day. Juice volume varied because concentrated shots may supply as much nitrate as a much larger bottle of ordinary juice.
For this reason, comparing products by milliliters alone can be misleading. A small concentrated shot may contain more nitrate than a full glass of an unstandardized drink.
Anyone experimenting with beetroot juice should choose a product that declares its nitrate content, begin cautiously, and monitor blood pressure rather than assuming that a larger amount will work better.
How Quickly Might It Work?
Acute studies have recorded changes in blood pressure within several hours of consuming nitrate-rich beetroot juice. This corresponds with the time required for nitrate to be absorbed, circulated through saliva, converted by oral bacteria, and transformed into nitrite and nitric oxide.
Longer-term studies usually involve daily intake for one to several weeks. Whether the effect continues beyond the supplementation period is less clear.
Beetroot should not be treated as an emergency remedy for a dangerously high reading. Severe or symptomatic hypertension requires medical evaluation, not a homemade juice.
A Practical Beetroot Drink
For a food-based option, blend:
- one small cooked or raw beet;
- half an apple or a few berries for flavor;
- fresh lemon juice;
- a small piece of ginger;
- water as needed.
This can be a nutritious beverage, but it is not equivalent to the nitrate-standardized products used in many trials. The actual nitrate dose will be unknown.
For blood-pressure research purposes, a standardized nitrate-rich beetroot juice is more comparable to the clinical evidence. For general nutrition, whole beetroot has the added advantage of fiber.
Could Beetroot Replace Blood-Pressure Medication?
No.
Even the more favorable meta-analyses describe beetroot as a possible adjunct—something used alongside established treatment—not as a replacement for medication. The average systolic reduction reported in research is meaningful but modest, and some participants experience no reduction at all.
Stopping medication because a home remedy appears to lower one reading can allow blood pressure to rise silently again. Medication changes should be made only with the clinician who prescribed them.
Beetroot is best understood as one possible part of a broader blood-pressure plan that includes an appropriate diet, sodium reduction, physical activity, weight management, adequate sleep, and prescribed therapy when necessary.
Who Should Be Careful?
Because nitrate-rich beetroot may lower blood pressure, people who already have low blood pressure or take antihypertensive medication should monitor their readings and discuss regular concentrated use with a healthcare professional. An additive effect could theoretically lead to dizziness, weakness, or excessively low pressure in susceptible individuals.
Beets also contain oxalate. Research has shown that beet consumption can significantly increase urinary oxalate, which may be relevant for people with a history of calcium-oxalate kidney stones.
Beetroot may temporarily turn urine or stool pink, red, or purple. This is commonly called beeturia and is usually harmless, although unexplained red urine or stool should never automatically be blamed on food.
Concentrated juice may also cause nausea, stomach discomfort, or diarrhea in some people, particularly when consumed in large amounts.
How to Try It More Safely
Before adding daily beetroot juice:
- Measure your blood pressure consistently for several days so you understand your baseline.
- Check whether the product lists the amount of nitrate it supplies.
- Start with the manufacturer’s standard serving rather than doubling the dose.
- Continue taking prescribed medication.
- Record your readings at approximately the same times each day.
- Stop and seek advice if you develop persistent dizziness, faintness, weakness, or unusually low readings.
- Speak with a clinician before regular concentrated use if you have low blood pressure, kidney disease, recurrent kidney stones, or take several cardiovascular medications.
Do not discontinue antibacterial mouthwash that was recommended for dental or medical reasons simply to increase nitrate conversion.
The Bottom Line
Beetroot is one of the more credible food-based approaches being studied for blood-pressure support.
The research suggests that nitrate-rich beetroot juice may reduce systolic blood pressure by roughly a few points, with some analyses reporting an average reduction close to 5 mmHg in people with hypertension. The effect on diastolic pressure is less consistent, long-term evidence remains limited, and some well-designed trials have found no benefit.
That makes beetroot promising—but not miraculous.
Used carefully, it may complement a heart-healthy diet and medical treatment. It should not replace blood-pressure medication, and the only way to know whether it is helping is to measure your blood pressure reliably over time.
