Researchers have found interesting glucose-related effects in cells and animals. But a plant nickname is not a prescription, and “natural” does not mean incapable of lowering blood sugar too far.
What is the insulin plant?
Costus igneus, also called spiral flag or fiery costus, is a tropical ornamental plant used in parts of India in traditional wellness practices. Its thick leaves grow along spiraling stems, making it easy to recognize when correctly identified.
Traditional users commonly chew the leaves or prepare them as tea. Modern interest focuses on plant proteins and other compounds that may influence glucose transport and insulin-related pathways.
What the research actually shows
Laboratory studies have reported that extracts from the plant can affect glucose-processing pathways in cultured cells. Animal studies have also found glucose-lowering effects.
