Worms Can Invade Human Brain when You Eat this Common Food!

Pork, bacon, and sausage are one of the most frequently consumed foods in the United States. Even though these are “Americans’ favorites”, pork products are filled with tapeworm like the Taenia solium. Once they enter the body, they can transfer themselves into the eyes, brain, and every other tissue. When you consume pork meat from pigs that have already been infected with the worm, you are worsening your overall health. If you have already seen videos online of the disgusting situation in factory pig farms, this news may not be as surprising as to some.

Tapeworm Infections Are on the Rise?

Recently, a woman living in Arizona, Dawn Becerra went to the doctor’s after feeling ill and experiencing violent epilieptic-like seizures for almost a month. The team of doctors told her that she had contracted a parasite, probably from after eating pork during her trip in Mexico. Consequently, Becerra needed to undergo a 6-hour surgery in order for the worm to be successfully removed from the brain and to stop causing damage to her health. The worm caused a lesion in her brain, an infection medically known as neurocysticercosis.

How Do Worms Enter Your Body?

Consuming infected food is one way whereas coming into contact with the feces of an infected animal is another one. There are several forms of tapeworm whereas three of them can infect the brain and from a medical point of view, we need to be most worried about and do our best to avoid the main brain one, i.e. the pork tapeworm. According to the WHO, around 1/3 of epilepsy cases happened in countries where neurocysticercosis happens on a regular basis.

Treatment of Pork Tapeworms

These infections are usually addressed with antihelminthic drugs which target the worm. Also, some anti-cancer meds have been identified as potential therapy.

How to Protect Yourself from this Infection?

Neurocysticercosis infection is mostly triggered by poor hygiene and sanitation and failing to wash your hands. The latter may result in consuming the eggs of an adult worm residing in your intestine. Believe it or not, self-infection is rather common. Also, if you happen to travel frequently, make sure you pay attention in case you are visiting a country or a region where these infections happen regularly.
