Did you know that we spend approximately 1/3 of our lifetime on sleeping? This being said, sleep plays a crucial role in our overall health. In addition to getting sufficient hours of sleep, it is also important to choose the right position; there are specific poses that are more suitable whereas others need to be avoided. This being said, today’s article is focused on presenting the most common health problems that happen due to not sleeping in the right position.
How Does Your Sleeping Pose Affect Your Health
- Pain in the back
Sometimes, chronic back pain could be a consequence of a low-quality mattress. Therefore, in addition to investing in a high quality mattress, make sure you place a pillow under your knees so that you place your spine in the right pose and decrease the tension in the tendons. If you happen to sleep on your side, opt for a flat pillow and put both of your hands under it.
- Neck ache
If you are a stomach sleeper, go with a thinner pillow and change positions throughout the night to minimize the chance for pain. If you sleep on the side, place your hands under it.
- Heartburn and ache in the legs
Heartburn sufferers should know that the optimal pose for them is to sleep on their left side. In case of leg cramps due to poor blood flow, put a pillow under the legs to balance the body. Avoid caffeine 6 hours prior to bed and also massage the feet and legs before bed.
- Snoring
Snorers should never sleep on their stomach and need harder and higher pillows. Sleep on the right or left side so that you do not impede the breathing process.
- Insomnia
If you find it difficult to fall asleep at night and you toss and turn for hours, make sure you do not use any technology and avoid caffeine, tea, and alcohol 6 hours prior to going to bed. Also, balance the room temperature; the temperature between 20 and 22 degrees Celsius is considered to be the most ideal one.
