Pineberries, the Ancient Strawberries, Are Becoming more & more Popular

Do you know what pineberries are? – If you’ve never heard of them before, you’re not alone. This is an ancient fruit which tastes like a mixture of bubblegum and pineapple.

They’re actually strawberries but their name is inspired by the flavour of pineapples. Their flesh is white and their seeds are red-opposite of the strawberries we know.

Although they’re not a new thing discovered recently, they’ve recently gained a lot of popularity.

One of the Most Distinctive Strawberries

They’re not GMO as many people think- either its flavour or colours are genetically modified. They were one of the original ancestors of the garden strawberries we all know and were crossed with the red species from North America.

There are also other white strawberries that are cultivated; but they’re versions of the Alpine strawberry Fragaria vesca. Unlike pineberries, their seeds are white or light green. And, they’re also smaller.

Pineberries’ breeding program began around 10 years ago and the farmers needed around 4 years to bring them into the market.

First, the pineberries were introduced in 2010 on April Fools’ Day. They were mostly well received, although a lot of people didn’t think they’re real.

Today, they’re rare to find; still, they’re definitely worth trying out because of their unique taste and flavour. Pineberry plants that produce the most popular and prototypical pineberry are sold in the US seasonally.
