When one Margaret Hubl, 89, from Nebraska passed away, her family ensured her legacy lives on.
Hubl was a quilter and created stunning quilts throughout her lifetime. And, her family made sure all of them are displayed in the church in her memory.
They placed her most beautiful works as drapes on the backs of the pews in the church during a ceremony.
Her granddaughter, Christina Tollman, said she never imagined how many were there. They managed to cover almost every pew.
This is when she realized how many beautiful quilts her grandma made and what a special meaning they have.
Special Quilts with an Amazing Meaning behind Them
Hubl was a woman who dedicated her life to her family.
She had three children and then took in the twins of her sister-in-law after a tragic accident.
Together with her husband Henry, they raised all of the five children in a small, three-bedroom home located on their farm.
At first, she sewed to make clothes for her children; however, when they grew up and had their own kids, she made something for those children too. Soon after, she started making quilts for each of her grandkids and gifted them when they graduated from school.
Tollman recalls how her grandma wanted all of her grandkids to have something to wrap up and stay warm when they went to school. She was very thoughtful about every person who got the quilts.
When she passed away and her family gathered to go through her things, they found something like a pocket notebook. Inside, she wrote whose quilt she worked on and what day she put it into the frame and on which day she took it out.
She put in a lot of time into the quilts and soon enough, they became a treasured gift for every grandkid on their wedding days.
One of her notes says ‘put bow tie quilt in Feb.13, 99-finished Jan.2020’.
Tollman says she has three unmarried cousins and on the day of their grandma’s funeral, they saw their quilts for the first time. It was a really amazing moment, she says.
It Was all Worth It-We Have Something to Hold onto
Her family says that all of the hours and all of the thought she put into the quilts was worth it.
Now, they have something to hold onto and to wrap themselves up with when they need love and comfort. Although it may seem like a simple thing-gifting someone with a quilt has a certain magic to it.
They explain that these quilts are the love she made for all of them and what she made for them to wrap up around when they’re hurting, when they miss her.
