In February, 2019, Nupur Gupta was near the end of teaching a two-week yoga retreat in Goa, India.
The weather was balmy and bathed the famous Goa beaches in a warm glow.
In between the practices, Gupta always made time for an enjoyable swim. On one day, she floated further than she usually did. However, once she realized the current was strong, it was a bit too late.
The water began to pull her down.
Gupta Started Drowning, but Was Trying to Stay Calm
Gupta recalls encouraging herself to keep swimming and to stay consistent, hoping she might make it to the shore.
But, whenever she tried to get back, the current pulled her and she would fight back up, gasping for air.
This is when she spotted a man approaching her. She never thought in this moment that he would become her husband.
Man Saves Gupta from Drowning & They Get Married
Attila Bosnyak, a financial adviser in his forties from Hungary, but based in the Netherlands, was a student in the yoga retreat. He applied to disconnect from all of the hustle and work pressure and to get some warmth.
However, she didn’t teach him because he was in the beginner group. Bosnyak was a good swimmer and wasn’t scared.
Still, it was challenging because of the strong current. Gupta remembers him coming close to her and holding her hand, trying to pull her out.
But, right at this moment, she was pulled by the current again.
Bosnyak realized that even if he could reach her hand, he wasn’t strong enough to pull her back to the shore on his own.
He tried to remain calm and glanced around. This is when he saw a cluster of rocks nearby that were blocking them from the view on anyone who’s on shore.
He figured out if he was able to climb on top of these rocks, he could wave to the lifeguard; however, there was a risk involved-the current could throw him onto the rock and injure him.
He tried to do it as calmly as possible. He couldn’t succeed-he was pushed by the wave four times.
For Gupta-it seemed like an eternity; her potential savior was drifting uncontrollably.
Gupta Starts to Panic
Gupta began panicking and thought what if the wave throws her onto the rock and she has a head injury.
Eventually, Bosnyak climbed the rock and waved and shouted; he managed to get the attention of the lifeguard who swam out right away.
He helped Gupta and Bosnyak swam nearby.
Bosnyak Realizes He Was Bleeding
When he got out of the water, he realized he was bleeding.
The back and thighs the most because he had scratches, as well as the fingers since he was trying so hard to hold onto the rocks.
Once Gupta realized this, her heart sank.
She was aware what this man did to help her. With Bosnyak tired and collapsed onto a sun bed, Gupta went into the nearest store for a disinfectant and, on a whim, bought chocolate ice cream too.
She tended to his wounds and gave him the ice cream. This is when he smiled gratefully.
Gupta remembers things changing for her in that moment. Bosnyak felt this ‘magic’ too.
Both Were Fine
Besides the shock and some scratches, both were fine and they decided to go back to the yoga center together.
They went into their separate rooms and reconnected at dinner.
They talked about where they came from, what brought them here, etc.
Since they were already enjoying the time they were spending together and the yoga retreat coming to an end the day after, they decided to postpone their tickets by a week.
They even spent Valentine’s Day together, enjoying the sandy beaches of Goa, kayaking, and exploring Portuguese churches.
Gupta’s birthday approached and they celebrated it too. They had a beautiful breakfast and Attila left her to the station before he left.
They agreed to stay in touch.
They Become a Couple Officially
Bosnayk called Gupta a month after and decided to start a long-distance relationship.
They planned to meet in Dubai; however, Gupta’s mother fell ill. She told Bosnyak she couldn’t meet him anywhere for the next months.
This is when he offered to come to her. He came after her mom’s surgery that went successful. When she met him at the airport, they went to visit the Taj Mahal.
A significant moment happened-Bosnyak got down on one knee and proposed to her. This was a promise to love one another and make things work.
In September 2019, Gupta got her Dutch visa and went to The Netherlands in October and moved into the apartment Bosnyak had in The Hague.
