FDA Approves First Smartphone App that Will Deliver a Dose of Insulin to Patients

Smartphones will now be capable of delivering insulin doses to patients after the recent approval by the US FDA of a smartphone app.

Tandem Diabetes Care recently announced that the FDA approved the delivery of insulin through their mobile app.

According to John Sheridan, the president, and CEO of Tandem Diabetes Care, this approval by the FDA is a validation of the company’s dedication to innovation and providing the diabetes community with one of the most requested improvement features.

Convenient & Discreet Way to Give a Meal Bolus

Thanks to the improvement in the management of diabetes by the Tandem’s Control IQ tech, giving a meal bolus is now the most common reason why people interact with their pump. Doing this through a smartphone app is a discrete and convenient way.

According to the company, this app will be available in the US without any additional costs to new t:slim X2 insulin pump users.

The updated t:connect app is made to offer t:slim X2 insulin pump users a chance to program and cancel the bolus insulin requests through their phones using the app.

It’s available for Android and iOS devices and it will provide 24-hour glucose trends, the changes in pump status, and insulin therapy data for users who will pair it with their insulin pump.

Very Useful Update for Diabetics

The pump can also work independently from the app and provide users with the chance to see pump therapy data, set up requests, and cancel the bolus insulin requests from the pump.

The expected update will happen through the software and it will take place in series during the spring. The limited launch participants, according to the company, have already been chosen.

The expanded launch of this new feature is expected to take place later in the summer.
