Indiana Police Department Lets People Pay For Parking Tickets By Donating To Animal Shelter

The Muncie Animal Care and Services Shelter located in Indiana takes care for more than 350 cats.

However, after they toured the facility, the local PD concluded that the shelter was low on supplies so they wanted to help.

To collect money, the Muncie PD decided to allow residents to pay for their parking tickets by making a donation to the shelter.

Practically, people were able to buy cat food to pay for their fines.

Pay for Your Parking Ticket by Buying Food for Cats in Shelter

According to Officer Jamie Browns who explained their program, if one has a $25 parking fine, you can bring up to $25 worth of cat food or litter to the Clerk’s office.

By making this donation, your parking ticket is erased. Even though the program was active for 4 days only, it was quite successful.

The Muncie PD was full of animal supplies. In fact, even people without any parking fines came to donate food for the animal shelter.

The Muncie PD shared several photos of the donations on social media and thanked to every person who donated. They claim the room was empty before they started.

How Did the Shelter React to all the Donations?

The shelter was amazed of all the donations.

Ashley Honeycutt, the office manager of the shelter, said that they don’t know if this will happen again, but they’re beyond grateful to Muncie PD and to the people who donated.

However, she also emphasized that they’re not the only shelter experiencing shortage of food. Being kitten season, she encourages everyone to help in their local shelter.

Don’t Need a Parking Ticket to Help Animals in Need

It’s important to note that you don’t have to be a resident of Muncie or to have a parking ticket to give back to your local animal shelter.

Unfortunately, according to ASPCA data, almost 6.5 million animals go into shelters yearly.

It would be really awesome if other cities and countries would implement similar programs, right?
