Texas Woman Severely Burned after Hand Sanitizer Caught Fire & Exploded

This woman from Texas is still recovering in the ICU after the hand sanitizer bottle she used allegedly caught fire while she tried to light a candle.

The woman, Kate Wise, was left with major burns on her whole body.

She lives in Round Rock and she said that she put on hand sanitizer as protection for her and her three daughters from the coronavirus. However, when she lit a candle, her hand caught fire.

Because of it, she said, it lit every place where she had a sanitizer on her hand. The woman claims the flames made contact with the off-brand bottle and it exploded.

And the fire went all over her face and in only five seconds, her entire body was consumed by flames.

Wise Ends Up with Severe Burns

Wise explains that the moment this happened, two of her younger daughters immediately run to the neighbors to look for help. She managed to take off the burning clothes and take out the disabled daughter and the pets outside.

Currently, the Round Rock Fire Department is investigating the underlying cause of the fire. There is also a page on GoFundMe to help the family with the expenses for the medical treatment.

Wise is also hopeful to help increase the awareness in people about the dangers of things as simple as a hand sanitizer.

She says this isn’t something you want your children to see-this part killed her because she never wanted them to go through such a horrible thing.

How Can a Hand Sanitizer Explode?

According to Dallas firefighter Sherrie Wilson, experts have warned people about the risk of hand sanitizers exploding when they come into contact with flammable liquids and direct sunlight.

The FDA has also urged US consumers to avoid the hand sanitizers which may have toxic substances.

And, they also warned about some brands not being able to kill the virus. Many of these products contain methanol used to make fuel and it’s harmful when it’s absorbed in the skin or ingested or inhaled.

The list by the FDA of sanitizers that it’s best to avoid has expanded to around 100 brands and around 150 types.
