Artists Paint Gigantic Bookcase on Side of a Building Featuring Locals’ Favorite Books

Most street artists draw their masterpieces on abandoned buildings or old train tracks. However, in the case of one street artist from The Netherlands, Jan Is De Man, another canvas was more suitable.

He created stunning 3D paintings for the local communities in an effort to connect them with each other. He often includes the community members who commission him to be a part of the project.

His most recent gift to this Dutch neighborhood is a tri-level trompe l’oeil wall mural bookcase on one apartment building located in Utrecht.

He got help from fellow street artist Deef Feed with whom he had previously collaborated on several street art pieces.

Street Artists Jan Is De Man & Deef Feed Team Up for a Literary Mural in Utrecht Neighborhood

The location for their 3D mural was known before the concept was created. Is De Man knows the people who live on the first floor of the building.

They wanted to commission him to paint a mural for a while and gave him freedom in choosing the design. The only thing they asked from him was to be something positive for the whole neighborhood.

At first, they thought of painting a huge smiley. They believe people become instantly happy when they spot a smiley.

However, they later changed their minds. The idea felt incomplete and a bit too simple. Is De Man came up with the idea for the l’oeil mural.

This is a visual illusion achieved through a painting. It “tricks” the eyes into seeing the painted details as 3D objects. He studied the apartment’s shape and location and this is when the idea of a huge bookcase hit him.

He enjoys creating 3D illusions and loves seeing people smiling. He was certain that this mural would bring everyone together. Including the residents was pivotal for the artists.

They asked from people living in the building and people from the neighborhood about their favorite books. They managed to include eight languages and cultures in one mural.

They welcomed every culture, language, and age. The artist’s only rule was no political or religious books.

Every other book title suggested was welcomed. The artists worked non-stop for an entire week to transfer the idea from paper to the wall.

The most challenging aspect was the planning of the concept.

But, with the right idea, nothing is impossible.

Bringing People Together & a Popular Photographing Spot

After the mural’s reveal, the building hasn’t only turned into a place where the community comes together, but people actually come here to take a photo.

The project has combined various cultures and a variety of people together. It all went beautifully and the focus was on presenting diversity through books.

Is De Man says he won’t be revealing his plans for the future and he will let his actions speak louder than his words.

We can’t wait to see what he will create next!
