Without doubt, memory slips can be quite frustrating and worrisome, especially when they occur more often than they should. This can cause a lot of fear in people and lead them to immediately suspect dementia or Alzheimer’s when they struggle with forgetfulness.

6 Reasons Why You May Be Forgetful

  • Some meds

Antidepressants, blood pressure meds, tranquilizers and some other meds can mess with your memory due to the confusion or sedation factor. Hence, they may make it more difficult to pay more attention. If you suspect a medication is causing your memory problems, talk with your physician. Maybe they can suggest alternatives.

  • Insufficient sleep

Poor sleep may be the cause for your forgetfulness. Rest and sleep are crucial for the reduction of anxiety and mood changes and consequently, memory problems.

  • Too much alcohol

Too much alcohol can mess up your short-term memory, even after the effects have worn off. Though what too much alcohol is depends on the person, it is for the best not to go over the recommendations, i.e. two drinks per day for men and no more than one for women. One drink usually refers to 1.5 ounces or 1 shot glass.

  • Depression

People with depression often struggle with low drive and motivation, chronic sadness, and low pleasure in things that one usually enjoys. And, forgetfulness is another symptom or a consequence of it.

  • Anxiousness and stress

Chronic stress and anxiety may make it difficult to focus, take in new information and skills, and consequently, cause memory issues like blocking formation of new memories or remembering older ones.

  • Underactive thyroid

Problems with the thyroid can cause sleep problems and depression, as well as lead to forgetfulness. Consult your doctor for a blood test that can show whether your thyroid is underperforming.
