Lower Blood Pressure; Protect the Brain & Balance the Blood Sugar with Bilberries

Most of us are probably already familiar with blueberries; however, what do we know about their lookalikes, i.e. bilberries?

It turns out that this small fruit is actually rich in an abundance of health benefits.

Native to the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia, bilberries are tinier and darker than blueberries.

This stronger color is because of a flavonoid they contain known as anthocyanin. It’s also present in blueberries, as well as some other purple fruits and veggies.

The amount in bilberries however is what makes them one of the optimal sources of this crucial nutrient.

How Can Regular Bilberry Consumption Help Improve Your Health?

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition notes that eating bilberries helps reduce the blood pressure and the risk of cardiac health problems.

They came to this conclusion after closely observing 2000 women aged 18 and 75 for more than 10 years. The amount recommended was 2 handfuls per day.

Other study reviews have found anthocyanin to be very potent antioxidant which helps in protection and restoration of brain cells from oxidative stress.

The Diabetes.co.uk recommends them as an awesome way to control the blood sugar. Despite more research being necessary, their anthocyanin may be of aid for the balancing of glucose levels in people who have type 2 diabetes.

It helps strengthen the blood vessels in the retina and can contribute to better vision in these people.

How do Bilberries Taste?

Although similar in looks with blueberries, bilberries have a more acidic and sour flavor, rather than sweet.

You can consume them raw or cook them with some unrefined sugar for a reduced tartness.

You can also find them in supplement form. If you do decide to take them like this, always consult your physician in advance.
